This is a Mexican grocery store that has a food service counter that seems to have overtaken the store. This is the place to go for Taco Tuesday. $1 a taco, with about a dozen different meat choices. Can't wait a full week for Taco Tuesday to come around? Thankfully, there's Taco Friday as well, with the same $1 tacos. Al pastor, lengua, barbacoa, seasoned pollo are among the choices. Barbacoa and pollo are my favorites and I tend not to stray from those. The chicken is seasoned and have veggies fajita style thrown in. The barbacoa (beef cheek) is cooked and seasoned to perfection and is so tender you can rip it apart with a fork. On the weekends, they serve seasoned lamb dishes. Again, they are cooked to perfection. I've tried the lamb stew and it's really wonderful. There are about half a dozen choices of salsas to choose from. They range in spiciness and all are tasty. They used to be on the tables in buckets, then in ketchup containers but I think KCK Health Dept cracked down and now there's a full salsa bar right by the tables. One of the best places in town to get your lunch on for under $5. Everything is fresh and delicious. And authentic! Hands down, the best Mexican food I've come across so far in the KC area.

We come here almost every Sunday! We've tried almost everything. The plato de carne is good with the bulb onions on the side. Tacos, tortas, burritos & menudo are also all very good. My two favorites are the pastor tortas and burrito.

If you're looking to save time and money AND have fantastic food...why haven't you been here yet?!!? The cafeteria side is AMAZING! Some of the best pastor I've had in awhile! (The carnitas, for me, was a bit greasy - but still tasty - I just felt like I had lip gloss on for hours afterwards!) Nothing fancy, just really good food, fast service and shockingly affordable prices! I can't wait to come back on a Sunday morning for the chorizo and eggs! Served with rice and beans and it's $4.50!!! SHUT UP!!!! I'm in!!!! The meat counter flashed me back in time! Some of the freshest looking, well cut and tempting raw meats of ANY grocery store I've been in for at least 20 years! You just don't find this anywhere anymore! When I'm feeling less lazy, I'm all in on the meat counter! They will cut your steaks to your spec!!! Seriously, this place just made me want to jump up and down and squeal YES!!!!!! Made me feel like I was home and even though my Spanish sucks, no one there held it against me! Will be back very soon! Me encantó, mucho!!!!!

The best Mexican in KCK. When they have it, get the carnitas. Otherwise, the pastor is great as well. The burritos are great, and Taco Tuesdays (and random other days) offer $1 tacos.

Had the asada, barbacoa and the discada tacos today. All were excellent and the discada was by far my favorite! Friendly staff and great prices!

Yum! Yum! Yum! Try it all. It's all good.

Read the rave reviews on the tacos at this place. Had some business in downtown KCK so decided to try it out. Had the asada and pollo tacos. Tacos served in corn tortillas and come topped with cilantro and onion. Limes and salsa served on the side. Loved the steak tacos the best. The chicken taco was good and juicy, but very messy. Will go back for the steak tacos. Only wish they were serving some chips to go with the tacos as a side. Maybe try the flautas next time. Highly recommend.

Hot damn! Went today. My first visit and this baby gets a solid four with no hesitation. For now, at least, it's all about the tacos. A dollar each on Tuesday. Succulence! When we walked in the door of this grocery store/lunch room, there were 20 folks in line to order, pay and take baskets of tacos to either window counters or communal tables. The place was hopping. Primarily Hispanic customers, though there appeared to be people from all walks of life. As I waited in line, I was trying to take everything in. A lot of action, between the hustling employees, the progressing line and the diners tearing through tacos. There was signage that likely outlines the offerings, but I was too mesmerized by the life going on around me to capture any details. There were some people eating who had plates that included rice and beans, but the vast majority simply had baskets stuffed with varying amounts and types of tacos. I made my order simple. Two al pastor and two barbicoa (best)......succulent! I'm not going to go on about the intimate details. Suffice to say, it was all I needed to eat at lunch. It was delicious. It was a steal. I'm going back. Often.

Tasty tacos! The al pastor and asada are both tasty, filling and cheap! I prefer the tacos here to those at El Fogon, flavor-wise. Step into the grocery store, head past the tables and order at the left end of the counter. I found this confusing when I was there, so I'm sharing! Then you pay at the cash register. They will give you hot or mild sauce and both are good - but the hot IS hot, so be warned! Can't wait to go back and check out the grocery.

Soo damn good.. Some of the best tacos around. We even took home 12 additional tacos for the night lol. The carnita taco and pastor are awesome! Yummo will be going back tomorrow to try the lamb taco lol.

Taco Tuesdays and Taco Fridays are where it's at. Seriously the best tacos I've had in Kansas City so far. Definitely a trip to the wild side as Scott T. suggests, but one you can't afford to miss.

I have been here 3 times. I am only brave enough to get the steak street tacos. To be honest, the other meat looks kind of sketchy. That being said, the steak tacos are excellent. I love the little cart they have with all kinds of sauces, limes & pico. Tip - get your drink from the refrigerator & then order your food so you don't have to make two purchases.

This is the real deal. If you want something more authentic you will have to go to Michoacan. Don't forget to order a Mexican Coke with your tacos.

bonito means pretty in Spanish. I dunno if I can say that about this restaurant/ grocery store, but can say that Bonito Michoacan serves up some delicious mexican food on the cheap. I'm a fan of the Thursday plate special for $4.99: choose 2 meats, rice, beans & tortialls. That + a big can 'o coconut water makes for my usual meal. Favorite plate meat is now the marvelous mole (chicken) which is packed full of multi-dimensional flavor. Chile verde is good also. Mexi street tacos are muy bueno. Pastor is my my preference for those & if I'm craving a quesadilla, pollo it is. Variety of salsas on the tables is satisfying & service is friendly & swift. If you need some fresh produce, grocery items or giant pinatas they have that too. Authentic, delicious, cheap, fast mexican food makes this a frequent spot on my dining rotation.

Checked this place out on a whim from a co-worker that they had good, cheap tacos. He was dead on. Tuesdays and Friday's they have $1 soft tacos. You get your choice of 11 different meats and it's still only a $1. They also put your choice of onion or cilantro on it. If you want a drink you have to wander over into the grocery section of the place an purchase it separate. In the end this place is a no frills, high value place that delivers. I'd go there and recommend this to anyone wanting a deal and willing to step out of their comfort zone.

  • Andrew K.

Outstanding tacos. This is the al pastor you have been waiting for - flavorful, wonderful, vibrant. And at something like $1.50 each, dangerously inexpensive. I've been twice and they are consistently excellent. Well worth the trip if you're coming from the Missouri side. The staff are nice and helpful, the place is simple and straightforward, and the food is delicious and delicious. The menu is long, so I'm very much looking forward to trying more. But thus far I have no need to try anything but those tacos.

  • Fred P.

This is what food is supposed to taste like. KCK has a secret...the best lunch in town that also happens to be the cheapest. If you like food then immediately go to this spot for lunch on Tuesdays and have the best street tacos in the Midwest. Well done simplicity, intoxicatingly authentic, amazing salsa bar with incredible taco toppings. Pastor, Asada and Carnitas tacos will change your life. If you like free chips and salsa then head to your local Mexican mush suburbia slop bucket Mexican place. But if you like real food, with actual taste then this is for you. Drop by the bakery across the street for a sweet treat to round out what is surely your best lunch trip in many years.

Best street tacos in KC, in my opinion. They have other meal options too, but I can't bring myself to order anything but the tacos when I go there! I love the chicharrones and the barbacoa. But get whatever meat you prefer, it's all good. Before you leave check out the meat counter in the back, its full of goodies I tell you!

Yum! This place is great! I was craving some good "real" mexican food and my friend suggested I go here...I live in Olathe so I was trying to hit up my locals first, stopped by a couple places but they didn't sell meat by the pound to go so I can bring it home for dinner.... I then ventured out to KCK, and it was totally worth it. I got a couple tacos ($1 because it was Tuesday, wahoo) and then meat to bring home...it's all good but since it was my first time there I was a lil slow on the ordering and aparently the girl who was helping me had to roll her eyes at me because I was ordering 4 items...Whatever! I had my kids with me, this is not a place to bring a double stroller into, BUT the girl that was working wearing the belt w/ a couple things a mase and handcuffs, probably had the best customer service EVER. She was soo awesome! I will totally go back!

Hard to find better Mexican food anywhere. Affordable and delicious. The assortment of salsas seal the deal. Don't know why anyone would go to 47th and Mission for tacos when this place exists.

  • Mike H.

If you like the idea of really good places in strange locations (think famous gas station barbecue, or incredible tacos at a butcher shop) then this will fit the bill for you. It's basically a taco shop inside of a Mexican grocery store. The environment is a little harsh but it's worth it for the good food. Otherwise you could just take it to go which is easier for me since I live relatively close by. I had tacos with different types of meat in each one; carnitas, beef and a shredded pork. Each table inside the store has the toppings you would want for tacos. You can get a fountain drink if you want, but since you're in a Mexican grocery store it's really easy to get some Jumex or Mexican Coke. The best part about the place is the amazing Mexican pastry shop next door which I assume is affiliated with the grocery store. Maybe there's a separate place to review it.

  • Julie S.

Holy shit! This place is muy bien. The street tacos are so fresh using the best meat and two fresh tortillas to house your meat, onions, salsa, and fresh cilantro. Grab a Mexican coke and stand in line. The line may seem long but it moves super quickly.

This place has set the standards for my taco pleasure. Like seriously! I can't even eat a taco, burrito, or whatever at taco bell anymore. The meats you definetly want to try is Lengua, Asada, Pollo, Carnitas, Barbacoa, and of course Pastor. They have even more, but those are the kings. They have a taco tuesday and a taco friday. Therefore, you have 2 days to get dollar tacos. Plus, they have added a little "extras" bar that contains pickled red onions, pico de gallo, limes, salsa verde, guacamole, and some other stuff I don't know about, but taste pretty darn good. It's very busy, and no do not expect a resturant style type of eating. It's actually a grocerry store with a little eatery in it. You can buy the cooked meat by the ound, but I will warn that is pretty expensive, to me. What else can I say that hasn't been said???

I tried four tacos in this busy Mexi-grocer-diner place after going to another taqueria that was closed. A lady who spoke nearly zero english had enough patience with me (and me with her) to lead me here. What a find! Two lengue tacos. Beef tongue is perhaps the perfect taco meat. Sliced fajita style here and stewed with onion, salt, pepper and bay leaves... it was just melt in your mouth delicious. It said "I am beef... aren't you happy?" And yes... I was happy!!! PLEASE try lengue if you have not... I promise you it is THAT good. The pastor was singing pineapple and spices... very good as the pinapple comes through here... the way pastor is suppose to be. The fourth taco was cabeza... beef head (cheeks actually). Another stewed and grilled giant of flavor. God people... you have no clue how good these meats taste because most of you go for the safe stuff. Keep doing that... it is more cabeza for me. The tables have three sauces... jalapeno/avocado which is marvelous, a red chili sauce which is excellent and spicy, and a tomatillo sauce that just didn't do anything for me. I went on a Friday, and the tacos were $1 each. I also had a 1/2 liter can of coconut water. Under $6. Overwhelming value and flavor. You may be the only gringo there. I was. Muy bien. Just go... rapido!

I've been searching for a great place to get Mexican street food for quite some time, and though I'm still excited to give El Cmaino Real a try, Bonito Michoacan serves up some really excellent food. You know it's going to be good when you walk in and find 20 people waiting in line for food. Their carnitas was merely above average, but the al pastor and asada were both fantastic. Every table boasts 3 excellent salsas, pickled onions, and a container of pico de gallo. The excellence doesn't end with the food, however. We are talking about a grocery store, after all. Their produce is quite good and very cheap, and while I haven't tried any of their meat yet, it also looks to be of quite good quality. Some of their produce is pretty tough to find elsewhere, such as yuca and prickly pears. Of course, they also stock a wide variety of delicious Mexican sodas to wash down your delicious meal with. I'll hold off on crowning Bonito Michoacan as the king of KC Mexican food until I've experienced El Camino Real, but I would be very satisfied eating here regularly.

Before I begin, let me just say Tuesday's are $1 taco days. . . . Sigh . . . .my bladder is full to bursting, my stomach to the point of catastrophic rupture, and my mouth is STILL drooling as I try to gather my thoughts for this review. Here goes nothing . . This is the BEST spot for tacos in the metro. And if you ever come in here at lunch and see the lines of Mexicans, then you would understand. These tacos are so delicious, you might even fight a brother or two. Bonita Michoacan is a grocery (wannabe east-coast bodega), paleteria (frozen treats), and restaurant all wrapped into one. And quite honestly, the grocery is amazing. Plantains and onions at .69 a pound. INSANE prices. And the produce is fresh too. If I were a Mexican, I would have to say this is my one stop Mexican shop. But the star of the show, is their finger licking good tacos. And if you aren't careful, you might accidentally eat your fingers while devouring these suckers. There's everything from Carnitas, Carne asada, Lengua (Cow tounge), Barabacoa, Chicharon, heck they even have Borrego tacos! And for those of you that don't understand, that means LAMB TACOS!!!!!! Are you kidding me??? And let me tell you, I was so sprung on the Carne Asada taco's, I didn't even get to try the rest. The tacos are served traditional on two corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. You can request them not to put that on there, but you would be a grade A stupid idiot to do so. On the tables are your typical fare of green and red sauces (green my personal fav) and fresh pico de gallo should you choose to add more sexiness to your already sinful taco. If you are a taco fan, you need to own up to your distinction and head to this place ASAP.

Five because its authentic, tasty and not the same ole Americanized "Mexican". Horchata and dollar tacos hit the spot.

  • Matt S.

Woohoo! As good as it gets! is correct! It does not get better in town than this place, and it doesn't matter what you order. Eat tacos, or tortas or burritos try all the salsas, try everything. This is how Mexican street/fast food is to taste. Best lengua around, the el pastor is also not to be missed. You can't go wrong, unless you show up at noon on tuesday, because you will be stuck in line for a while. It gets busy, and it is best to know different types of meats in spanish too. Only problem is I want this place in Waldo, and open late!

  • Audrey L.

Amazing tacos in KCK for one dollar on Tuesday, not exactly finding a needle in a haystack. These however, are the best I've come across. Carnitas, barbacoa, al pastor, you get them piled high with cilantro and onions. They also pack you up with some killer green sauce and a spicy, almost nuclear orange salsa. Yes this is a Mexican hangout where Spanish is spoken, get over it and order some tacos!

  • Chamberlain H.

Been here four times. Had the tacos the first three times and they were very good. Right up there with KCK's other hot spots. And they had more meat selections. On my most recent visit I strayed from the tacos and got the "tamal combo plate." The tamal (tamale) was disappointing. It appeared to be sitting behind the counter precooked wrapped in a husk, which isn't out of the ordinary if its not too precooked. Then I noticed they took the tamal somewhere, presumably to reheat it, then put it on my plate with the rest of the sides. It was very dry and one end of it basically turned to cornmeal dust upon cutting. It came with a side of beans/rice and a scoop of meat of your choice. I chose carnitas which weren't your lean, pulled pork like carnitas that are more common. These were very fatty and almost gelatinous in texture. But had a good flavor and would have been better on a taco. Will return for the tacos but expected more from the tamales.

Small but great hispanic market with food to order and eat in. Get ready to duck and dodge as it's always packed in every aisle and corner. Side note: checking into here earned me my Mexi-can badge. LOL I showed it off to my group with pride. lol

  • James J.

Absolutely amazing. Authentic tacos that I have rarely gotten outside of local type restaurants across the border. The pastor is the best that I tried. (Sorry Reed, I tried the lengua and it was just ok). Barbacoa, asada and chicken were also excellent... .you cannot go wrong here for the price.

What a fabulous experience! These folks know how to run a restaurant and produce authentic, delicious, REAL food! Cheap, fast, and simply outstanding. The tacos (street taco style) are available with various fillings and are out of this world. The Pastor tacos are my fave...pork with pineapple. Seating is homestyle with onion, cilantro, pico, and varying toppings on the table. I frequent the "real deal" Mexican places in KCK as often as possible...and this place ranks VERY high.

  • Aaron G.

Kev L. said it all. I can't really add anything else other than the fact that you can do some grocery shopping after you eat without ever leaving the joint. They have a meat market in the back, with dried or canned goods in the front. Not for those who are watching their diet, unless you are watching your diet slip away into darkness.

I had three tacos al pastor (tender pork and pineapple) and a side of refried beans. Pretty good although I won't go so far as to say the best. I also had the agua de jamaica (sweet Hibiscus drink), which was good. Prices are good, although certain things like tacos are considerably cheaper than other items. When you go in, the restaurant part is to the right and it is cafeteria style. You make a line and then they heat your tortillas and dip up your meat of choice. Then you can seat yourself at one of the tables (which weren't incredibly clean). I didn't really care much for the green bottled salsa. I like the avocado based salsa at Supermart El Torito II better. The servers are bilingual and speak to you in English first. Even though it was a very authentic Mexican place, I noticed a lot of gringos there. I guess the word about good food and good prices got around. :) Mexican or not, you'll feel comfortable here. Afterwards you can go shopping for any ingredients at the grocery. :) Mexicano/a o no, tu te vas a sentir a gusto aqui. Despues puedes ir de compras para cualquier ingrediente en la parte del mercado.

Wow, this restaurant absolutely deserves five stars. Amazing tacos for $1.50 each, very generous portions, lots of choices, wonderful staff, incredible condiments at the tables. And a great grocery store with lots of hard-to-find Mexican food. I recommend it 110 percent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Matt K.

I have been on a street taco conquest and I have found a location that is worthy of return visits. AWESOME TACOS. Barbacoa (they use beef cheeks) is great. Nice amount of meat on your tortillas with cilantro and onions and then you have the option to add more fresh toppings at your table. Three different salsas (orange, light green, dark green) along with fresh pico, slightly pickled onions, and fresh limes. The only way to make these tacos better would be if a grandma was hand cranking the tortillas for your tacos like at El Camino. I get hungry just thinking about their tacos!!!!

Some of the best authentic mexican food in Kansas City. Get the barbacoa... it has been the best i've had outside of Mx, and the price is great. Don't expect english, or a comfortable booth to sit in though, it IS a small grocery/ carneceria. It is all about the food!

Best tacos in town. Hands down. If you go on a Friday night expect a line. Don't expect the same kind of atmosphere as taco republic but the food is top notch and dirt cheap...I feel like I'm stealing from them. The market is clean and employees are friendly.

Awesome tacos and food! If you're looking for great Mexican food, this is the place to be. They have 1 dollar taco nights on Tuesdays. And the tacos are only $1.50 all other days. Really, really delighted food to be had here.

I'm back. It's been a while but don't think I forgot about you Yelp. In case it hasn't already been established. I really really like Mexican food. It's the best. I could literally eat it every meal. Which is why this review is about the most slept on Mexican meal there is - Breakfast. Specifically Huevos. (Eggs for my gringos out there). I hit up Bonita any morning I'm in downtown Kansas City, Kansas for work. I go for the Huevos with red. There's also a green sauce. Usually they just give your boy one or the other without asking, but when I do get asked I go for red. Both are delicious. They throw in four eggs scrambled to the next level and toss it on a plate with rice and beans. Obviously this is a pretty large dish so you'll probably only need a few pieces of fruit to last you the rest of the day until dinner. Or have a big lunch too, I'm not your mom eat whatever you want. Bonita has a ton of other food too. I'm sure it's all good. They not only serve food they sell it too. That's right fam. Bonita is technically a Mexican grocery store and bakery. Come by and pick up a pastry, some fruit, tortillas, some meat, a few piñatas, maybe a statue of Jesus - they got it all. This place gets my co-sign. Always welcoming to me and I can't even speak enough Spanish to order properly, but they still hook it up. By the way you're gonna help yourself out here a lot if you speak Spanish. I would benefit in some many ways if I was bi-lingual, it would open up a lot of opportunities both professionally and social. But the best part by far would be ordering in the native language at my favorite ethnic restaurants.

Inspired by the recent Yelp Taco Crawls, as well as coming off a disappointing experience at a generic suburban Mexican restaurant, I knew it was time to get over to Bonito Michoacan to finally try out the legendary tacos. This authentic gem on Minnesota Ave in KCK was packed on a Sunday afternoon. Their taco menu could truly stand alone, but the rest of the menu had me making mental notes for next time while I waited in line (I see you, Chile Relleno..). I went with a few of my favorites, the Asada, a couple Pastor, and a barbacoa. Each one is perfection in a double lined corn tortilla. Simple. Authentic. Flavorful. Legendary. I love the addition of a heavy dosage of cilantro and onion on top, and while these tacos can stand alone, I had to feed my hot sauce/salsa addiction on at least one of them. I'd be totally lying if I could tell you what was in the green sauce I put on one of my tacos, but it tasted fantastic and had just enough kick. I dared to try the dangerous looking, hot orange sauce and it was not for me. Four of these tacos, at $1.49 is about the best value for quality food that I've found in a while. It's also more than enough as I was stuffed after eating it. We perused the market a bit and loved seeing all the baked Mexican goodies and things that you can't find at the local Hen House. While it's a bit of a trip for me to get here (~25 minute drive), it's definitely on my mind for a return trip. In the meantime, I'll just sit here and dream about them as lunchtime rolls around.

After reading so many amazing reviews of Bonito Michoacan, I have to admit that I was a little let-down this past weekend when I finally made it out to the KCK establishment to experience it for myself. For those of you who haven't been there, Bonito Michoacan is a combination Mexican market & restaurant. Having been to several similar places in the past, my first impression when I walked in was how large, bright, and clean this place seemed to be compared to the others. The restaurant sits in the front right-hand side of the store, with plenty of seating right in front of you as you enter; and the market stretches to the back and around the left-hand side of the store, with the cash register right up front. The market portion of the place is really cool - filled with all sorts of Mexican goods, produce, etc. And reasonably priced too! Limes were crazy cheap, hot sauces were affordable and aplenty. The only thing I was disappointed not to find was a good selection of Mexican cervezas and tequilas. Now to the restaurant. When we arrived, there was no line for food. We took a few moments to browse the menu board overhead, looked at all the different meats simmering in front of us, and then stepped up to the counter to place our order, but there was nobody there to help us out. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of people behind the counter working and preparing other things, just nobody who stopped to take notice that we were waiting. I started to wonder if we were supposed to order at the other end of the serving line. Then, another woman came in shortly afterward who looked like she knew what she was doing. I asked her if we were in the right place, and she replied, "Yes, it just takes a while sometimes to get served." When we finally did get around to ordering, the service didn't really improve much at all. We ordered a variety of tacos, refried beans, Mexican rice, a bag of their tortilla chips, and then sampled a variety of salsas from the salsa bar. All-in-all, the food had good flavor, but everything came out just luke-warm in temperature, which further added to the disappointment. Will we go back? Probably. As I said before, the food was all very good. I'm just hoping that next time it'll be more fresh (HOT) and the service will be a little more up to what we've come to expect from other Mexican restaurants in the area.

Okay so I don't want to give away the secret because the lines will get longer but omg the food at the grocery store cafe is the best authentic Mexican in town!!!!! The taco meat selection is varied to meet everyone's tastes and the salsa are just as varied and fresh made as well. I am not a fan of the restaurant next door because the food is more tailored towards American Mexican but they have great margaritas. My advice go to the grocery store eat dinner and then go get drinks next door.

Best street style tacos I know of. Great palantas (when they have them)!!! Get in line on Tuesdays for $1 tacos. The steak had me first taste...I enjoy the cabbage relish and pickled onions on my tacos but they have a very wide and authentic salsa bar.

This is my favorite taco place in the city. They have a great variety of meats that you can see and choose by pointing if you need to. They have a variety of salsas and things that you can add to what you buy, free of charge. The tacos are filled generously with lovingly cooked meats. They always have a special meal deal. Plus they also have an entire freaking bodega! Oh yeah and a full meat counter! In addition to tacos they do homemade soups, Burritos, Tortas, flautas, enchiladas, and a bunch of other yummy selections. In the summer they have a guy with a cart out front, who grills chickens, eat it. You can order it inside as well, it's delicious and they will set you up with a plate of sides to go with your chicken.

Ok Friends, for anyone who's keeping tabs on the KCK taco crawl I have to let you know, this was my favorite stop. First of all, while indulging many tacos throughout the day, I also compared the cost of a couple of grocery items which I found to be the cheapest here. Next, I liked the set up, it seemed more streamlined than some of the other places we visited. Finally though, the tacos! I had carnitas and it was awesome. The salsa was a great accompaniment, very flavorful and packing a punch but not too hot. If this hadn't been just the third stop of the day I probably would have ordered five different tacos, they were that good. While I didn't try any of the pastries they looked gorgeous and delectable. I can't wait to bring my friends here the next time we're craving tacos.

The tacos are glorious. For this place you'll have to drive to the part of town where people tell you to go if you want Coke with real sugar in it because their hipster asses claim it tastes so much better and why can't all Coke be made with real sugar and someone has to put them in their place by saying "It's corn subsidies you fools!" so if Iowa didn't have the first caucus, you could have more Coke with sugar! There's generous parking all around, and just remember it's the grocery store and not the bakery. You'll find yourself in a decent sized line because everyone is trying to get their slice of heaven. I'd tried a few of their tacos before, so last time I went I decided that wasn't good enough. I want it all. All. Turns out there are 13 tacos on that menu. It would behoove you to know some Spanish, because asking for one of everything is rare apparently. About a quarter of them were darn strange things I'd rather not eat again. Half were pretty darn good. It's that last quarter of them that made me tremendously willing to endure any food baby stomach pains and alimony costs to get more of that hot meat in my mouth. With that cilantro, lime, and a random hot sauce, you have the makings of a perfect dinner. Maybe after eating you can play a game of "What the hell is that?" in the grocery section, but I don't know what most vegetables look like anyway. Good luck!

Everyone knows that the best places for food in the world are often those little holes-in-the-wall, in those out-of-the-way-places, with unassuming exteriors but the most friendly service and amazing vittles. Bonito Michoacan is one of those here in KC. Prior to visiting, I think my favorite place for street tacos was Ricos Tacos Lupe, down on the bouleavards (which is still pretty awesome and very hole-in-the-wall-y), but Bonito Michoacan is now certainly my favorite place for tacos in KC. We went on a rainy evening, on a quest for delicious tacos: Off in KCK (yes, you have to travel to Wyandotte County, the restaurant is a small corner of a Mexican grocery store, next to a panaderia (Mexican bakery) that shares the same name. The offerings are pretty extensive for street tacos: 8 or 9 different options for tacos alone! I tried the standards, carnitas and barbacoa, and also had their take on the al pastor and borrego (lamb) tacos. Que rica! The tacos were served in freshly made tortillas, and the meat was so flavorful! Garnished with onions and cilantro, they were the perfect meal. The al pastor had marinated pork with pineapple, which tasted so good! The lamb was also excellent. Other folks in my party tried the lengua (tongue), delicada (pork, beef, and bacon!) and the chicken divorciada, all of which were exellent. The chicarrones were a bit soggy, but still good. They had a ton of different flavors of salsa, from varying levels of spicy (to mild and creamy to burn-out-your-colon-spicy), with some fresh grilled peppers and radishes as well. Top it off with a tall horchata, and that's a meal worthy of the trip to KCK! The restaurant also had a ton of other Mexican food offerings, all of which looked delicious, and looking around, the place was packed with local Mexican folk enjoying the food. That is truly a sign of a good restaurant! It was also fun looking around the grocery store, and having some pan dulce from the bakery for dessert. So, here's the overall score: Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 - the waiters were friendly and patient with some of the non-Spanish-speakers in my crew, and genuinely wanted us to enjoy our meals Price: 5/5 - tacos were $2.50 each...that's a steal! Ambience: 4/5 - it's a hole in the wall, but oh so charming. Overall: 5/5. Great job! I love this place - it reminds me of the great street tacos I could get in East LA, San Diego, and Tijuana, but much cleaner, and with much friendlier waitstaff. I'll definitely be back!

Mexican has forever been ruined for me. The food here was absolutely, hands down, the best I've ever had and all else will be compared to this. Really, I think it was better than what we had in San Antonio on our honeymoon. The long wait in line and the chaotic environment were totally worth it. Will probably be going back every single time I go to KC now. Yum, yum, yum.

This place. This place was something else. Here's the story: I went with my Tuesday Taco buddy and we decided on this place because I'd never been here. First, I'm directionally challenged and google maps took me to the Bonito Michoacan Bakery across the street. But whatever. I figured it out. The place that sells food is actually a grocery store with a food counter inside. Not too dissimilar to what they actually have down in Mexico. So, we're here for a very authentic ride, let's just say that. We stood in line and the menu lists a bunch of food but of course we were here for tacos and the menu also lists a bunch of meat/etc you can put in your "street" taco. My buddy and I said, What the Hey, let's just get one of each. So we did. It was 13 tacos. So you have 13 different options of fillings for your tacos-- even though the menu only showed 11. That was interesting. And it was also pretty incredible. The lady behind the counter didn't speak much English so she had to pull some other lady from the back to understand our request of "one of each". Perhaps this isn't a common order. I also enjoyed the side bar full of toppings/ salsas although we didn't use much because we wanted to get the full effect. And the full effect we certainly got! Some of the tacos were wonderful (carnitas, asada, pastor) and some were not to my liking (I actually spat a couple out into my napkin--- because I'm a lady like that). The dinning area was crammed full of cheap metal-like tables and chairs that were packed full of people. About 5 or 6 various small children were zig-zaging between the tables. The place was noisy and hot and after the dinner crowd wound down, they started piping Mariachi music quite loudly over the speaker. So I can't say these were my favorite tacos in KC. The entire experience was very authentic. These were certainly no hipster-street-tacos. You're not going to find any mango salsa on these babies. And sometimes that's exactly what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes I just want a good solid white-corn tortilla stuffed full of greasy, well seasoned meat topped with onions and cilantro. And at this place, that is exactly what you're going to get.

Score! I've been 'Jonesing' for some street tacos for awhile now and finally decided to check out this place on the way home from church this Sunday morning! First we stopped at the bakery and bought 6 or 7 different items which were all very good, authentic. I'm not usually a big fan of Mexican baked items (too dry and not very sweet), but I could tell these were very good. Finally we made it over to the grocery store and restaurant. Nice surprise in KCK! I saw several of my favorite candies that I usually have my mom ship over from San Diego, now I can stop by here! Finally we ordered 'breakfast'. I had a bowl of menudo which was very tasty, definitely tasted homemade. I haven't had a good bowl of menudo since my mom's back home in SD. We also ordered 3 Asada and 3 Barbacoa tacos which were perfect. What can I say, another grand slam for street tacos! I loved both the Asada and the Barbacoa but maybe give the Barbacoa the edge! Very authentic, very tasty, might become a regular after church on Sundays!

Yelper Daughter wanted Mexican for lunch, but anticipating the gorge fest of First Look for Foodies later in the day, I suggested an adventure to KCK for street tacos instead of something fried or slathered with chili and cheese. Who says eating Mexican has to be an artery-clogging, seam-splitting, diet-busting endeavor? Not here at Bonito, where there is nary a cheese- nor chili-slathered item to be found. No sour cream or guacamole, either. But judging from the happy staccato Spanish heard all over this little corner grocery, THIS is the real deal. Under a big picture menu board (to help us gringos out, I'm sure), servers build your meal in front of you from a bank of tubs full of mouthwatering fillings. I wasn't sure what was what, but the barbacoa, pork with pineapple, and chicken were all delicious. They put the filling into the tortillas and leave it to you from there-once you get your food you move on to another table of pico de gallo and sauces. I will repeat: no cheese, no sour cream. One of the sauces is creamy light green, I assume there's avocado in that. The two that I tried were both fairly spicy, but not painfully so. The side of rice I got was huge, and way better than average-the rice was fluffy and really had some flavor, rather than being an afterthought. If tacos aren't your thing, they also have burritos, tortas, and gorditas. There was also a brothy soup with big chunks of meat and vegetables that I almost tried, and I think they had posole too, which I love. The rest of the place is a grocery store, complete with meat counter in the back. Everyone in the place is very friendly, and if you're worried, they all appear to be fluent in English. It's obviously a local hangout, but everyone who comes in is treated as a neighbor. Definitely worth another trip!

I typically come here to get beef short ribs, but this time I decided to try the food. Needless to say, I'm glad I did. I had the tacos and they were amazing! The marinade was delicious and they had a really big selection of sauces to put on your food. A whole lot better than chipotle and if you go on Fridays the tacos are a dollar! The place however wasn't much of a restaurant type of atmosphere, but what can you expect for a place inside a grocery store. If you want quick, inexpensive Mexican food I would highly recommend. And the ribs are a lot cheaper than other places round town.

Been watching those food TV shows and all of their spectacular "finds?" Yea, I'm tired of them too. Wishing YOU could discover a hidden gem in your own backyard and have a dining experience that sort of spins your head around? Food so good it's sinful? Those jokers don't have anything on you. GET OVER IT and get here as fast as you can. Take a drive to a dive on the wild side on scenic Minnesota Avenue, KCK. Had a little food religious experience here for lunch. A trio of tacos so fine that whoever created them sold their soul to the devil. That or there's a Patron Saint of Tacos watching over the help. Barbacoa from beef cheeks, Chicharones that normally are a bit too barnyard for my wimpy white boy palate, and Carne Asada--the easy stuff. Plenty of onions, cilantro, limes and a sauce bar to die for. Double wrapped grilled small tortillas. Side of beautifully done rice. So good I wanted to cry, and almost did when I paid the bill. $5.94. Could have left off the rice and saved myself .99 cents and still have been satisfied but why not go home completely stuffed? A taco lunch as good as it gets for under $6.00? Would have paid $22-26 or more for a meal this good at the very basic but highly rated Brooklyn Taco in NYC (a great place to eat--I've reviewed them). So get this Adam Richman, Guy Fieri, Andrew Zimmern and all of your pals. Stay AWAY from Bonito Michoacan. Do not eat here. Go away. Leave. Plenty of overrated places over on Southwest Boulevard with orange cheese melted all over the plate you can roll your eyes for on camera. I need to be able to get in the door any time I want. The details. It's a grocery store. Expect folding chairs and tables, get in line, no wait staff, order, pay and carry your own. Expect a line. No prissy alcohol drinks with fine names and salt on the rim or crappy sombreros on the wall. No colorful lights or beers with fruit. Grab a Jarrito if you wish. Ample and spacious parking out front on both sides of the street. Lock your car. You're welcome.

One word. Tacos. Okay, two words. Yum. Stood in line with the boyfriend for a good minute but it was worth it. He was a bit more adventurous with his choice of taco meat (he's Mexican) while I stuck to the taco asada and pastor. Don't usually like corn tortillas but these were good!

I've only given 4 restaurants a 5-star rating so far. This is the fifth, and it makes me wanna give the pervious ones 4. The good here is amazing, I was a little skeptical at first because I never heard of it. Decided to take a leap of faith and it paid off. I'm glad I had a chance to eat here. My personal opinion, go for Tacos-Carnitas.

Okay, I thought El Camino Real was the closet thing I'd get to good authentic Mexican food in the Midwest until I came here. I really like this place and being from California that's a huge compliment. It doesn't have any ambiance what-so-ever, but the tacos keep me coming back. Even though its hot and packed on Tuesday and Fridays for dollar taco days I try to make it there on those days.

I finally made it here. It was a treat. The neighbor hood is in KCK and isn't the tidiest of places to travel and eat but Bonito Michoacan has really done a good job at making their street corner inviting and revitalized. The first thing I noticed on the outside is bars all over the windows and they had some sort of nacho/drink stand outside on the corner. In a mostly spanish neighborhood I felt a little out of place but decided to dive in anyways. I got a plethora of tacos, they had many other authentic dishes to choose from and the store itself was pretty reasonably priced as well. For less than 5 bucks I got 3 onions a candle, and three drinks. Tacos are about 1.50 - 1.99 so they are on par with other tacos around the city too. Most of the staff can speak English but we did have a little difficulty ordering. I will probably return soon! They also sell an assortment of meat in the back and make chorizo.

Some friends and I recently embarked upon a Taco Tour of KCK, and this was our first stop. The people were super friendly, and, if you can judge a place by the number of people in line, it's definitely a winner! They had a great selection of street tacos - I got a carnitas taco that was delicious but a little fattier than I would like. Everyone else raved, however, so I give them four stars. One person in our party also had a tamale and said that was great as well. We didn't browse much in the grocery store, but their selection of drinks was great.

This is my go to place for street tacos. I love their steak asada and el pastor (seasoned pork). Their tortas are huge and tasty as well. Great price and fun environment. They catered for us and we got about 20 pounds of meat and toppings for tacos with all of their hot sauces for super cheap!

Good luck!

I love me some Bonito! I have heard that this location is better than the Olathe one. There are pros and cons to each one (one bigger, one more signage to help guide you in ordering...) but I would be super happy eating at either one every day for the rest of my life. Stop number two on the taco crawl was met with a new taco option. Lamb! Hey, it's Easter weekend, we are supposed to eat lamb right? And I chowed down on that yummy tortilla wrapped bit of (insert afterlife destination of choice)! Normally I don't sway from the beef cheeks at Bonito, but that lamb adds another delicious option to my taco world. I really like the signs here telling what the different options are. In Olathe I point at most things when ordering. Although I haven't had anything bad, it is nice being able to tell others what to order. This is another taco place in a store and there is a decent selection of groceries. Tacos were the highest here at $1.99, but still not a bad deal. If you go on Tuesdays they are only a dollar.

Walking in to this store is like traveling to another country! The music was awesome and the grocery carried amazing products from Mexico and other areas of Central America. This was our second stop on our Taco Crawl this past Saturday. There was even a guy grilling chicken on the sidewalk in front of the store and nothing competes with the smells coming from a grill. When ordering, customers pass in front of a window where you can view all f the marinated taco meats. I knew the borrego was going to be amazing when I saw how clean the bones appeared peaking from inside the tray of meat. Seeing and smelling the meat was super exciting for the group attending the Taco Crawl. We tried three tacos at this stop: Discada Taco = Marinated beef, pork, bacon, and ham Barbacoa= marinated beef cheek Borrego = seasoned steamed lamb All tacos were served on fresh tortillas with cilantro, onion, and lime. The Borrego was OUTSTANDING as expected. Our 11 year old really enjoyed the Discada Taco. The barbacoa was standard and not as amazing as the barbacoa served on an earlier stop. I will absolutely be visiting this location again soon! Great vibe in the store and restaurant.

Hello from Florida. What can I say that hasn't already been said? I'm a vegetarian and don't eat meat. It wasn't on the menu, but I asked for Vegetarian tacos made with avocado and they were great. For vegetarians, avocado is like the meat. I also tried Chile Relanno which was awesome. Next to the cash register is a self serve salsa bar with spicy orange mole sauce. I got a box to go, bought some beer, and had the rest back at the hotel room. If you come at lunch time, there will be a line of people that wraps around the inside of the restaurant. But it's worth the wait.

Best tacos in town. Hands down. If you go on a Friday night expect a line. Don't expect the same kind of atmosphere as taco republic but the food is top notch and dirt cheap...I feel like I'm stealing from them. The market is clean and employees are friendly.

Love this place! I've been three times and have not been able to eat a gorditas. ;( guess I'm gonna have to be there when they open. A bit disappointed today, no chicken. 4th time a charm???

Been to this place a few times now. If you're looking for authentic Mexican restaurant ,this is it. There's always a line every single time we came. Worth trying ,especially with the price.

What else can I say that hasn't been said???

bonito means pretty in Spanish.

Some of the best authentic mexican food in Kansas City. Get the barbacoa... it has been the best i've had outside of Mx, and the price is great. Don't expect english, or a comfortable booth to sit in though, it IS a small grocery/ carneceria. It is all about the food!

Hot damn!

Taco Tuesdays and Taco Fridays are where it's at. Seriously the best tacos I've had in Kansas City so far. Definitely a trip to the wild side as Scott T. suggests, but one you can't afford to miss.

LOL I showed it off to my group with pride. lol

Kev L. said it all.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
